Coming Soon: Harry’s World
July 29th, 2009 by fred
Thanks to everyone who voted in the online poll over on the forum board! Based on those votes, we’re going to be starting up a new series of biweekly posts next Tuesday, first covering the content of the “player setting primer” chapter titled Harry’s World, and once that’s wrapped up getting into the world of paranormal politicking with Old World Order. Stay tuned!
Sorry, I forgot to vote when the poll was put up. My preferred content for previewing would be pages 1..n, where “n” is the final number of pages in the book.
In fact, I would pay thirty or forty dollars for such a preview. What do you say?
people just give it a rest they are not gonna show you anything special…just let the matter rest and let the men work…God I am only 17 and I am smarter than most of the people that post.
No personal attacks, no “I am better than” comments, please.
I personally voted for the monster preview, just because I wanted to see more of the mechanics behind the game, but with no new book for nine more months, it might be good to get a professionally researched primer/reminder of the world (i.e. something OTHER than Wikipedia…)
I kind of see the difference between the two secions, but just in case I’m misinterpreting it, is the “Harry’s World” just a cover of WHAT goes bump in the night, and the “Order” a look at how those things that go bump in the night interact?
You’ll get the answer to that in 5 days (ish), but I’ll say that Harry’s World is sort of like the high-view of The Truth About Everything that someone in the Dresdenverse might get — without necessarily getting into the gritty specifics of the creatures (they’re covered, but briskly, since that’s not super important to getting started). It’s about establishing context for everything.
Order gets into things like the big organizations (White Council, for example, and the Vampire Courts) as well as the Accords, etc.
Excellent! Personally I voted for Monsters, but this sounds good as well. I know you probably can’t answer, but will we get to see an actual write-up of the Accords?
@Jack, we’ll talk about what the Accords are trying to do, and how they’re to be used in the game, but that’s a bit separate from doing what I’d think of as “an actual write-up”. We can’t do that, because a) it would unnecessarily lock Jim down for the next dozen books he hasn’t written yet, and b) probably be as long as the RPG itself. It’s a body of law!
I think that sounds about right. As long as some key things that the Accords already deal with, such as the laws of hospitality, are detailed, the main flavor of the Accords that is present within the Dresdenverse will be maintained, and there will be some groundwork for how to adjust and add to the Accords as needed for your own game, if you choose to do so. With that in mind, is there going to be any sort of example of how a law might be written in the Accords themselves? It could be really useful for people who need to make up the actual wording of their own specific laws that they need for their respective games.
With all that aside, I’m really excited for this new preview, and everything I’ve seen so far on here and on the forums has be awesome. Keep up the good work, guys!
As with everything setting, we’re going to go as far as the books themselves will allow us, but we try not to speculate too much beyond that. It’s all about striking the right balance between preserving Jim’s freedom as a writer with his own darn setting, and making sure we *document* that setting as fully and consistently as possible.
I don’t know if you guys have given much thought to this given the focus on the main product, but that brings up an interesting point: as Jim writes more books and introduces more things, are you thinking that you be writing expansion books or just online postings that give the rules updates?
@JohnD, our current plan is to treat the books themselves as supplements — if we do our job right, the ability to construct anything you see in subsequent books will be present in the game itself. We’ll probably do some updates via blog post or downloadable materials on this site as the books come out.
I have been a “Harry” fan for a long time. Would love to see more books written and more frequently. Just keep him alive and well.
One a year isn’t good enough?
