Who’s Going To Origins?

February 7th, 2010 by fred

So who in our audience is going to Origins in late June? Make sure to come by the conjoined Hero Games/Evil Hat Productions booth, where we’ll either have copies of the game or (if a shipping/printing delay/snafu nails us) will be doing an in-person instant-content preorder of it.

And if you’re going, do you think you’d be able to run an Evil Hat game or three on the official con schedule? Previous convention-game running experience is a plus, but we’d love to get some people running games of Don’t Rest Your Head, Spirit of the Century, Swashbucklers of the 7 Skies, or A Penny For My Thoughts.  People able to run The Dresden Files RPG would be a big help as well, of course — if you’re familiar enough with Fate via Spirit of the Century and think you could learn the new game via PDF, pipe up. :)

I think my group will be going to Origins this year. Yay! I’ve never GM’d at a large con, though I did run a demo of the A Song of Ice and Fire Game at a FLGS. If the pdf preorder happens to drop in Arpil or May so I have my hands on the rules a while, I might run an “unofficial” game or two while I’m up there. Otherwise, I probably wouldn’t feel comfortable doing it.

    Looking forward to it!

I’m going, and I’d love to help out. I could easily run an S7S or a Penny game, and yeah, probably a DFRPG game after some serious cramming. :)

@Tom: If you’re going to be at Dreamation, hook up with me and Matt Gandy (and probably some others) as we brainstorm out some canned, short S7S demos. (I think using a similar set up to the LB game you ran at DC Gameday is a good thing to keep in mind for any S7S or DFRPG canned demos… but Penny and DRYH are both too “of themselves” for that, I think.)

I’m now quasi-seriously thinking of going.

People able to run The Dresden Files RPG would be a big help as well, of course — if you’re familiar enough with Fate via Spirit of the Century and think you could learn the new game via PDF, pipe up.

    I’d run a DFRPG game if I:

    1) Got some experience with SotC as a player between now and June, and

    2) Got my hands on the PDF.

But #1 is the most important.

@Tom C — Thanks! As you’ve seen in email, I’m gonna tap you to help coordinate some of this.

@Rechan — I hear ya, there. If you happen to get that experience, let us know. That said I have no idea what the deadline is on submitting event info to Origins.

Looking at Origins site, it looks like March 1st.

I’d really like to just GO, but the Origins site isnt’ very useful; not even a forum for sharing rooms/rides.

And the SIZE of Origins (25k people) is scary! That’s CROWDED. How can you say it’s more relaxed and quiet?

@Rechan, nope. You’re looking at the dates for the GAMA Trade Show if you’re seeing March. From the front page of the website:

    Origins Game Fair:
    June 23 – 27, 2010, Columbus, Ohio

As to the size, it’s fewer people than GenCon and the same approximate amount of space, which helps, but it’s not about the number of attendees, it’s about the attitude.

I’m going to Origins (live here in Columbus)
I ran SotC as a con event two years ago – I reckon I could so so again.
I could probably wrestle just about any other game to the table if pressed.

  9. February 8th, 2010 at 09:42 | #9

Well, I live in Columbus, and was planning on attending, if only to see the dealer’s room like we did last year. I picked up both DRYH and SotC there, and have some familiarity with FATE 2.0 (and have learned more than one game system from a PDF).

I’ve not run official things at a con before, but would step up if you need people. I was going to Origins anyway, but knowing I’ll get Dresden Files there seals the deal. I may not be your first choice, but I’m local, ready and willing;)

I’ll see someone from Evil Hat that weekend, either way, I’m sure.

I’ll be going! I’ve got other things to run, of course, but I’m definitely up for sitting in on a session of something Evil Hat-flavored.

Alas, nope. Not in the cards this year.
I’ll be ordering up when I can though. :)

I’m going, and would be willing to run a couple of slots of Dresden Files. I have time to brush up my Fate/SotC skills.

I’m going to Origins. I’ve run DRYH at cons before, and that worked out well. Might be interested in running SotC, too.

Okay. This is crazy, but I think the vibes emanating from the Evil Hat have infected my brain, and I’m going to drop plans for GenCon and try to come to Origins instead. I’ve got to make sure there’s nothing scheduled on my family calendar for late June, and I’ve got to find some folks to share hotel expenses with – but I think I’m going to push toward the goal of coming to Columbus and if so, I will run some slots. Gulp.

Yep. I will run some slots. Let me see how feasible it is to pull this plan together, then I’ll let you know for sure, Fred, once it is more solid.

@Mick Bradley, man, I would really dig you making it to Origins. Don’t be shy about hanging out at the Evil Hat booth and after hours and all. :)

Everyone else who’s chimed in: I’m collecting your names and emails you posted with and I’ll try to say something coherent to you by next week or so. Bug me in the comments here by then if you haven’t heard yet.

I meant that the deadline for game reg is sometime in March, not Origin’s daet itself.

Woah! MIck Bradley will be at Origins? Now it’s VERY TEMPTING.

Was planning to come to Columbus for just the weekend, but when I read that Dresden RPG was being released at Origins, I had to change my plans! I will be there Wednesday, waiting in line at your booth. I’m not real familiar with the FATE system, but am willing to learn (as well as a buddy of mine). If you need any help, let me know. Hope to game with you all in June!

Things moved fast. My family and client schedule is clear, and support from my wife is secured. All I’ve got to do now is make the lodging thing work. Should be no problem, so I think I’m very likely in.

    @Rechan

You’re probably thinking about Mick Bradley the Australian photographer or Mick Bradley the British rock drummer. I’m just some dude who likes monkeys & pirates and rants a lot.

I’m definitely going to Origins and was already planning on running some Evil Hat games specifically some SotC/FATE, but I’d also like to run Dresden Files if that’s possible.

I’d run a Game, but I’m only going to be there a short part of the 24th.
    Ah, c’est la vie.

Hello, my wife and I are going to be attending Origins. I run a weekly fate game, I would be more than willing to run a Dresden files game.

I’d love to help out with GMing a session or two of DFRPG! I’m planning to be at Origins for the entire show.

My BF and I are trying to work out plans to attend Origins, but things are still up in the air for the moment. Neither of us has experience with the FATE system, but between the two of us we have about 10 years’ worth of table-top RPG experience, and both of us are good GM’s in various systems (D&D 3.5, Serenity, Shadowrun, Nightbane). If we are able to familiarize ourselves with the system in advance, I know we would LOVE to tag-team a DFRPG game, if that’s possible. If you’re still collecting emails, add mine to the list and as we resolve our plans I’ll keep in touch. :) Cheers!
