@badmojojojo, we need to get past the ship-out effort before we can have a chat with Jim about extending our license to cover other products. Right now the license arrangement we have only covers the books we’ve released.

I was considering a Shaman/Druid type of character myself. How about ,instead of shapshifting a “Ride Along” spell? Not full possion ,but a little nudging in the right direction of a animal and the abilityto sense what it is sensing. A perfect investigation tool!(Who REALLY notices that mouse in the corner?) Any ideas?

OK I have to say the books have lived up to all my expectations and beyond. I am already starting up a list of questions to try and get prepared for the 1st game. Under Faerie Magic p.166 there is not a system specified for Glamours such as a cost like in evocation/thaumaturgy producing stress and sponsored magic creating indebtedness. I hope it is not a free use of illusions because that would be over powered.

    @fred
I am glad to hear that. You did such a good job of keeping things in a minimal number of books. The only thing that would make me say break them up is if it was going to significantly slow down the release.

I waited, I worried. Then the book arrived. WOW…this is just amazing guys it was well worth the wait. So well put together. Well written, very clear and I will easily sell this to my group! Thanks.

Hotmail does tend to be the place where I see the most emails sent and mysteriously lost, but it’s definitely not the only one. Can only do activations and other admin overrides on a case by case basis, when folks use the Contact Us forms and links to notify us of such.

I am so excited!!! I have had my books for a while now… and to tell the truth, I was not a fan yet of Dresden beforehand. I am a fan of Lenny. I love the guy to death, as he is a good friend. And I wanted to support his endeavor, as he has been working on this for the better part of probably near 7 years.
But I bought all the Dresden books on my kindle for Android, which is ridiculously convenient… AND I love them. Have read almost the first three completely…. I am about 80% into Grave Peril. But I read them in like two days a book, so that is nothing…
I am waiting to move into my new apartment to start a group, and I still have my books wrapped in plastic so they stay all pretty…. AND I AM SO FREAKING EXCITED it is disgusting.
And I am normally not a paper RPG person, but like I said–I have to support my Lenny… and so I am venturing into new things… but I am the GM… which should be interesting. And difficult.

Hells Bells! Wow! What books! When my local games store showed me the Dresden Files RPG Books I was very tempted, but I stayed cool and started with the graphic novel to take a look into the “Dresdenverse”. Then I saw the DVD Box in another store. And foolish as I am I bought it. After that there was no sound argument that stopped me from buying the RPG books and now I’m on Page 200 and I think this is one of the three best RPGs I’ve red so far. Superb! After this great product I’m totally into the hole Dresden Verse. This RPG opened a door which won’t be closed for a long time! The downside of this product is: Highly addictive! A have my exams in about 5 weeks and it’s very hard to ceep my hands of the RPG and to look in my books and study for my final exams!
So, thank you very much for a great RPG!
    Greetings from Germany

    Hello,

And I have to congratulate the crew who made the books. I haven’t touched the world book yet, but the game mechanics are very nice, and very well done. I love the fact character development and creation uses same system – and there is no bloody experience awards.

The system is very nice as it does not put emphasize on combat like about 99% of other RPGs. The same mechanics – and working mechanics – are used all kind of problem solving. Great job.

I was very very happy to see copies of the books at Toronto’s Fan Expo this past weekend. The last 2 years I have gone I did not see a single RPG. This year was different. Hairy Tarantula had the Dresden Files RPG and several other vendors had other games. Good work guys.

    Hey,

I have been trying to register for the DFRPG website for a couple of days now, but I never receive the authorization e-mail to allow me to complete registration. I even checked my SPAM folder to no avail. I have requested it be sent many times. There does not appear to be any way to e-mail the admin of the board for assistance.

Perhaps someone here could offer advice to help me with my problem. I am starting up a totally new DFRPG campaign this weekend after decades of D&D, and I am stuck as to how to reward the players during the campaign. The books are completely silent on the topic. They don’t even do a great job explaining the fact that you can’t use magic items unless you pay a refresh cost for them, which makes it very odd for my group which consists totally of a group of plain vanilla mortals, at least for now.

So I am stuck with trying to figure out how to reward them as the campaign progresses. Cash? Bonuses are so slim in the game (a +1 can make a huge difference to a character’s chances of success) that I am having a hard time figuring out how to dole out rewards over a long period without unbalancing the game mechanic.

    Advice?

    September 14th, 2010 at 11:39 | #31

I’d argue that the book isn’t “completely silent” on the topic, given that there’s an entire chapter titled “Advancement”. :) It may be that you’re not satisfied with what it says there, but silent, it’s not.

As to getting forum access — make sure to contact the forum administrators via feedback@jim-butcher.com if you’re having trouble getting registered.

Alright, perhaps “completely” was a tad hyperbolic. But I am used to a D&D-styled system of rewards where you can tell at a glance how much loot a character should have based on their level, with gobs and gobs of candy to fling their way as a reward for being good players. Somehow the occasional fate point or a skill point metered out at the occasional Significant Milestone seems like it is going to lack the same impetus for adventure. I guess the players will be fighting evil purely for the sake of it, which will require a bit of a mental adjustment on my part as GM. Interesting.

Thanks for the e-mail address. I finally managed to get registered after trying two other addresses (the GMail acct was the winnah). Seems like a problem that others are having as well.

    September 14th, 2010 at 13:48 | #33

@Dave Wilson, I hear ya, but that’s the level at which the game can offer that sort of thing. And note, you say “a +1 can make a huge difference to a character’s chances of success” — so keep that in mind when you say “the occasional fate point or a skill point metered out at the occasional Significant Milestone seems like it is going to lack the same impetus for adventure”, because I sense a contradiction in thinking there. An additional refresh point is an additional stunt in terms of its potential, and that contains the value of a +2. A skill point contains the value of a +1. So if I merge the two quotes from you, I get “the occasional +1 can make a huge difference to a character’s chances of success and that seems like it is going to lack the same impetus for adventure” … which don’t make no sense to me. ;)

Any other rewards would have to be of the “soft” variety. Harry gets a new job and more responsibility over time, a bigger reputation, more allies and more enemies.

    @fred
OK, I gotcha. More emphasis on story, less on the goodies, and just get used to lower numbers. I guess it can work–it seems to be getting pretty popular out there.

I think I was discounting the effect of fate points since they are used up, not permanent. I am used to thinking in terms of long-lasting rewards as a meter for accomplishment: your sword gets more powerful, you amass a collection of trinkets and gewgaws to cover every eventuality, but here you get fate points and eventually powers and let your manipulation of the story through aspects and compelling/declaring show your progress.

It’s going to be an interesting process.

  35. fred
    September 14th, 2010 at 14:13 | #35

@Dave Wilson, but you aren’t rewarded in temporary fate points in what I’m talking about (in advancement), you’re rewarded in a permanent increase of your base refresh. Yes, that one point generates you a fate point which is temporary, etc, but it generates that fate point *every session*.

    Dresden Dice? What the.. Where…

Okay, I promise that I haven’t been on Mars, but, uh, who’s making the Dresden Dice and do you have a ball-park on when they’ll be ready?

  39. fred
    September 22nd, 2010 at 18:41 | #39

@Mr Sleep, end-of-the-year-ish. They’ll be “regular” fudge dice (in terms of symbols) but with some nonstandard materials/inks (relative to the core 5 fudge die colors currently on the market)

  40. Mr Sleep
    September 24th, 2010 at 19:33 | #40

Okay, for clarity’s sake, let me say that while I’ve been following the progress of this project for several years, I do not yet have the scratch to pick up the books, nor have I ever played a Fate or FUDGE based game.

So,god help me, what is the difference between FUDGE dice and a standard set of of gamer dice?

  41. Chris
    September 24th, 2010 at 20:20 | #41

So, my instinct upon receiving my books was to post a glowing thank you purely fueled by my excitement at having shiny new RPG materials. Instead I took the time to read them. Now that I have I still feel compelled to post a glowing thank you to the writers! My excitement hasn’t lessened one bit. The books are incredibly inspiring, and I can’t wait to start playing this! Thanks!

    @Mr Sleep
Fudge dice are a d6 with two minus sides, two blank sides and two plus sides. So, as they point out in the book (I believe) you can just use standard d6s and count 1-2 as a minus, 3-4 as a blank and 5-6 as a plus. Do I want fudge dice? Sure, what gamer doesn’t love new dice. Do I need them? Nope. :)

I just wanted to say that this is a great game. My group converted characters over to DFRPG and played Friday night. This was my first time running a FATE-based game and their first time playing it. Everyone loved it and got really into the game. It was a great experience.

    Hi,

I harass my local stores for the two books, but no news on their availability date :-(
Did I mention that I live in France?
Does Evil Hat have a distribution deal with this side of the Atlantic?

    Thx in advance!

@Ghislain, UK-based Esdevium, Germany-based Pegasus and Ulisses… yeah, we have a few. Of course you could see about mail-ordering within the EU through some place like Leisure Games out of the UK…

    Hi fred,

thanks for the info. No distribution deal for France yet, then? Like with Millenium?
At least, now I know that I can indeed try the mail-ordering from this side of the ocean ;-)

Too bad. By the way, congratulations, I saw that you were in the top five of RPG sales of 2010 3rd quarter!

Do you have an idea of what would be the price for the 2 harcopy books + both PDF + shipping costs for France?

  49. fred
    October 31st, 2010 at 13:22 | #49

@Ghislain, shipped by us, hideously expensive. Seriously, order from the Leisure Games guys if you’re going to mail order. I’m sure their website will estimate shipping for you (if it doesn’t, it should — ours does!) if you create an account, plug in your address, and create a shopping cart of stuff…

    November 1st, 2010 at 03:45 | #50

    Ok, thanks.
Shipping is still 15 € from leisuregames. I’ll check if I have opportunity to get it from a real store in UK if I or a relation of mine need to travel there. ;-)
