Character Types
It’s our goal to support as many types of characters as possible for the Dresden Files RPG. Ultimately what limits the kinds of character templates available as PCs is simple: it’s a question of whether or not the type of creature represented has so much power it loses any capacity for the mortal gift of free will. Free will is what makes PCs — and heroes — possible in the Dresdenverse. And when you lose it all, that’s when the dictates of nature take over. When wizards fall too far into the black or reach too high for power, when changelings make the choice to become full blooded fae, when a politician makes every moral compromise necessary to take the reins of influence, that’s when they stop being people and start to resemble monsters. It’s a slippery slope that’s all too easy to slide down.
To give an idea of what characters we’ll be supporting in the game, we’re doing a series of posts on our blog covering each of the character types. You can find the series to date, here.
On one page or site or somthing,it said that if you have left over refresh buy more skill bars in like great. now if this is even do able, can you get more at submerged? yet another of the never ending onslaught of my questions
@dante, I barely understand that question.
Refresh does not turn into skill points in any way, though you can spend it on stunts which give situation specific bonuses to certain skills.
lol, thats thats what i was trying to say, thank you and sorry for the confusion
i was looking at my buds pdf, and i saw that it said you should use eop for a scion, and that was really all i got to read about scions, how does a scion relate to an Eop? meaning how is a scion an eop? i was a little confused
@dante, mainly we were saying that the templates aren’t any different, even if the origin of the powers the character has are. (Or you could look at it this way: a scion is an emissary of power by blood rather than by undertaking.)
oh, okay thanks yet again fred
Before I say anything Im looking forward to the game good job
And Im having a problem between my friends the player and the GM. The player want to be a Fist of God (Knight of the Cross) and create a fourth sword while there were only three swords they wont stop arguing about it and its driving me bat shits. So I want to know do you have to make a fourth sword or do you take one up. Thank you
@Mr. Valintine, if the GM says it’s not it’s not. If the GM says it is it is. That’s how things work, there. That said, what’s wrong with the two “free agent” swords that aren’t currently claimed (they’re in Harry’s custody, sure, but it shouldn’t be hard to come up with a story whereby a character is selected to bear one of them)?
Ok thank you for clearing that up
I’m thinking about adding a power level of “Deep” (in keeping with the analogy) to my personal campaign, with 12 refresh and 40 skill points, to allow for a bit more power and flexibility, in addition to creating some templates from other supernatural sources (i.e. an Immortal from Highlander, for example). What’s neat, is that the needed abilities are already IN the DFRPG, I didn’t have to create new ones and risk unbalancing additions.
does anyone know if a half-dragon counts as an emissary of power?
@jonathan, sure — that’s a scion
I was thinking about creating a jade court vampire template. They would have feeding dependency (obviously), but they would feed through combat. Their only powers would be inhuman speed and recovery (possibly supernatural for either, based on the vampire’s experience), with the catch being unarmed combat. They would have a spirit, kind of like the white court’s hunger, but less inclined to kill, housed in a jade armband (hence jade court). Jade court vampires are made, not born, and one has to go through a trial of unarmed combat against a jade court member first. To be “cured”, one has to lose in a form of ritual combat to a non-jade court vampire. They would all know a secret martial art that capitalizes on the speed of the race, and several others. Also, they would all be banned, or possibly unable, to use weapons of any kind. Please tell me what you think.
A type should be half-vampire
@MR.C, good, because we have two half-vampire templates.
is the Game world placed just in Chicago or can it be anywhere in he know… and maybe unknown cities of society?
@TheDL, anywhere! The game includes a chapter on city creation.
You could also take an idea from other sources. You could be a holy warrior with a different weapon. Check out ‘Knight of the Word’ by Terry Brooks for some ideas.@Mr. Valintine
I’m new to the universe and curious if it would be possible to make a friendly Red Court Vampire. Not ‘friendly’ per say of course, just not blatantly hostile. A kind of disenfranchised vampire if you would, bored with politics and powers, considering him/herself a self-proclaimed outcast of vampire society, and very content to stay in the darker depths of cities, feeding off the occasional lost human, and working on the advancement of science/magic, only emerging from it’s ‘lair’ to feed or gather further essentials for it’s research.
@Prussian I’m no expert, but the impression I got from the novels (and RPG/other source material) is that the Red Court are innately evil*. They are simply too intertwined with their nature to be otherwise. That isn’t to say some aren’t more ‘friendly’ than others; your description seems entirely plausible. However I’ll add that expecting a red court vampire to partake in charitable acts, or become the big damn hero of a story (without personal, selfish motivation), is probably stretching it a bit.
*By humanity’s (probably hypocritical) standards.
By “make a ….”, I assume you mean within the realms of the RPG (this is its home site, after all), as a PC or NPC? In which case, the answer is really as simply as “it depends on what your group decide”. No one other than Jim himself could replicate the setting exactly, so if you think something would make for an interesting story/game – and your group agree – go for it!
